For Hectic Moms – Tips To Make More Me-Time
Love your microwave? Love it even more with these 6 cool tricks you didn’t know you could do in a microwave.
We all know that Nice ‘nEasy’s ready meals are always there when you’re wondering what to cook for dinner. All you need is a microwave, and voila, you have a home-style meal ready in a flash. But did you know that you can do more with your microwave than just heat up food? The TastyMoments team has been using these tricks for years, and now it’s time for you to get the inside scoop. So here are 6 things you didn’t know you could do in the microwave.
Disinfect Your Sponges
Dish sponges are riddled with germs! A 2017 study found that the average dish sponge is home to nearly 5.5 trillion microscopic bugs. That’s right, the thing you use to clean your dishes is practically alive with bacteria. But, before you toss your sponge, try zapping it in the microwave. According to GoodHousekeeping.com, it kills 99% of the germs found on kitchen sponges. Simply place it in a bowl of water (1/4 cup for scrub sponges and 1/2 cup for cellulose) in the microwave and zap it on the highest setting for 2-minutes (to be safe).
Say Cheers To Tears!
Get a bit weepy while chopping an onion? Say goodbye to the sting by placing your peeled onion in the microwave for 30 seconds on the highest setting.
Get The Most Out Of Your Lemons And Garlic
Did you know that you can get more juice out of your citrus fruits by zapping them in the microwave for 30 seconds – 1-minute? The heat softens the fruit and makes it more pliable when you’re squeezing the goodness out of them. Also, peeling garlic is a cinch when you wrap it in tissue paper and put it in the microwave for 10 seconds on high. The peel comes off like a dream!
Froth Milk Without A Machine
Don’t have a fancy milk frother at home? Want tasty cappuccinos without breaking the bank? This hack is for you. Simply fill a small jar or container with the desired quantity of milk (full cream works best) and shake the container until it’s nice and frothy. Then, remove the lid and place it into the microwave for 30-seconds – 1-minute (depending on the microwave). Delicious!
Save Stale Bread
Got a slice of bread that’s feeling a bit stale? Revive your bread by wrapping it in a moist (clean) kitchen towel for 10-30-seconds. Repeat until your bread is back to its fluffy self.
Use It To Proof Dough
Since we’ve all become bakers over lockdown, this is a handy tip. There is no need to buy an expensive proofing appliance – you can do the same thing in your “micky”. How? Place a cup of water in the microwave and bring it to a boil. Once the water starts bubbling, place your dough into the microwave with the hot water and close the door immediately to leave your yeast to do its thing!
