Baking Substitute Hacks For Lockdown

The Coronavirus has left many of us with a LOT of time on our hands. What to do? Bake of course! Baking is well-known stress-reliever and leaves you with something delicious to eat after. It’s a win-win. But what do you do when you run out of eggs and other basics?

We’ve got some baking substitution hacks that will let you carry on without a hassle.

Eggs:

You can substitute eggs with the following:

  • Applesauce: Use a quarter cup of unsweetened applesauce in place of one egg in most baking recipes. If you only have sweetened apple sauce, reduce the amount of sugar in your recipe accordingly.
  • Banana:Use a quarter cup of mashed banana (usually about half a big one) for each egg the recipe calls for.

Butter:

You can substitute butter with the following:

  • Olive Oil: For every cup of butter, use ¾ cup of olive oil
  • Greek Yoghurt: For every cup of butter, use ½ cup of yoghurt

Buttermilk:

Make your own with milk and vinegar. Take a cup of milk and add a tablespoon of plain white vinegar (or lemon juice) and let it stand for 5 minutes. BOOM! Instant buttermilk.

Sugar:

You can substitute butter with the following:

  • Honey: For every cup of white sugar in your recipe, try ¾ cup of honey.
  • Syrup: For every cup of sugar, you can replace it with ½ cup of syrup.
