For Hectic Moms – Tips To Make More Me-Time

Chin Up, Here Are 6 Proudly South African Inventions To Feel Good About

When times get tough, we sometimes forget how innovative we are as a nation. It was our ancestors in Africa who devised the first stone tools and learnt how to make fires. Innovation is in our blood.

Here is TastyMoments reminder of a few of the top proudly South African inventions to remind you how awesome we are.

Peppadews!

Farmer, Johan Steenkamp first discovered peppadews in the Eastern Cape. He saw – and tasted – the potential of this piquant pepper which he then cultivated in Limpopo in the Tzaneen area. Since then, peppadews have become an international hit, often used to jazz up our favourite foods – as evidenced by the perfect in-between snack, Ital Pizza Pizzetta Chicken and Peppadew. Yum.

The Wonderbag

As one of Time Magazine’s Top Genius products, the inventor, Sarah Collins, is one woman to whom every cook can tip their chef’s hat. Frustrated at having to eat half-cooked meals because of load shedding, she devised a plan. She created an insulated bag that works like a non-electric slow cooker. Once the food had been heated in a pot and inserted into the Wonderbag, the dish can continue cooking for 10 – 12 hours. No additional electricity is required.

In addition to relieving her frustration, she discovered that many women in Africa spend many hours far from home looking for firewood to cook meals for their families. So, she started to produce Wonderbags in greater numbers.

Today, many families on our continent and beyond rely on this invention for a hot meal

Sports Technology:

Your other half is going to be mightily impressed if you drop this snippet into the conversation during a tennis or cricket match. As a sport-loving nation, we are grateful that an engineer named Henri Johnson created a game-changer. He developed the radar device that measures the speed of fast-moving balls. The radar gun sends out a radio signal that detects moving objects and the balls’ angle within its range.

Cyber Trackers:

Computer scientist Lindsay Steventon, and physicist Louis Liebenberg, invented this technology for use by wildlife trackers. It has since become an essential tool for conservationists. It is now used far beyond our borders to track snow leopards in the Himalayas, Sumatran rhinos in Borneo, gorillas in central Africa and whales and turtles in the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean and general game in the Kalahari Desert.

Advances In Cost-Effective Solar Power:

University of Johannesburg Professor Vivian Alberts developed technology that uses a micro-thin layer of film instead of the much more costly silicon-based photovoltaic cells that had been in use before. This has made it possible to reduce the cost of solar electricity by up to 80%. We believe that the lights will stay on for him as we cheer him on.

We have many significant achievements to celebrate, so why not pop that lekker Ital Pizza in the oven already and share a feast with the family? Everyone will love it.
