How many people does it serve?

This should be an easy question to answer, but in South Africa, it’s complicated, due to our colourful multi-cultural rainbow nation.

  1. In an Anglo Saxon household, each pizza/meal should feed between 4 to 6 guests.
  2. In a Mediterranean, Ethnic or African home it could feed as little as 1 to 3 people for a single meal as food needs to be experienced in large quantities.
  3. If you’re of Scandinavian extraction, each meal could last you a month!

Then we need to look at your emotional state, as that is a determining factor when dealing with quantities.

  1. Have you had a terrible day with your boss?
  2. Did you fight with your spouse?
  3. Are your kids driving you insane?
  4. Is your wi-fi slower than the Groot Trek?
  5. Is the lockdown getting to you?
  6. Did that hot guy from the gym eventually whatsapp you?
  7. How are you doing with those skinny jeans?
  8. Is your mother-in law doing what mother-in laws do?
  9. What season of Game of Thrones are you watching?

All these contributing factors could influence the amount you will choose to eat; Ranging from “just a slice/bite” to “call in the kitchen Calvary we’re going down babies”!

  • Blue berries
  • Flowers and blooms from your garden
  • Dark chocolate sprinkles
  • Icing sugar
  • Crushed pistachios

QUANTITIES OF INGREDIENTS

  • Château Gâteaux Mousse Au Chocolat
  • 1 x cup raspberries
  • 1 x cup Blue berries
  • Flowers and blooms from your garden
  • ½ x cup dark chocolate sprinkles
  • 3 x tbsp. icing sugar
  • 2 x tbsp. crushed pistachios (keep a few whole)

3 EASY WAYS TO PIMP YOUR CHATEAU GATEAUX

TOPPING 1

Take your raspberries and place onto your cake, in a cluster, off centre. Place one or two of the raspberries away from the cluster, to infer they rolled off naturally by themselves.

If you want to make it more insta friendly, bring on a handful of blueberries and place some on the raspberries and others on the surface of the chocolate. If you would like to give it a feminine touch, you can also add a flower blossom from your garden.

And there you go. Topping 1 done.

TOPPING 2

A ramekin of good quality dark chocolate sprinkles, about ½ a cup and sprinkle them on top of the mousse au chocolat. Don’t cover the entire surface with sprinkles, less is more.

Then, off to the garden for some blooms. Position the blooms off centre, creating a beautiful arrangement of flowers. Place 1 or 2 away from the arrangement, either on the side or the edge of the cake.

And topping 2 is done. A variation to this topping f you like. If the flowers feel feminine, remove the flowers and replace with blueberries. Again, don’t cover the entire surface. And lastly, for some colour and crunch, bring on some crushed pistachios (keep some whole as well). Throw the pistachios from a height so that they find their place naturally onto the surface.

TOPPING 3

You need 3 tablespoons of icing sugar in a bowl, a sieve and an old placemat with cut out patterns. You can also use a paper doyley or a fabric/woven doyley. Ask your gran to remove one off the piano.

Position your placemat/doyley onto the cake, making sure the design pattern of choice is positioned to your liking. Also, make sure the placemat is flat on the surface of the cake.

Now, fill your sieve with the x 3 tablespoons of icing sugar and from a height, sieve the icing sugar evenly over the placemat, until the chocolate top is completely white.

Now, to remove get someone to help you. You hold the one side and they hold the other, carefully lifting it off the cake. You must lift together, to avoid smudging the icing sugar.

And finally, you can make a small bouquet using greens and blooms from your garden, to place either on the side or on top of the cake. We used twine; you can use string or ribbon.

In less than 3 to 4 minutes you have 3 different topping ideas for your cake! Now go forth, style and insta pic, your life away!  Don’t forget the hashtags…especially the one about being #blessed!
