The answer lies in letting the kids prepare their own snacks every day. Here are a few ideas that will keep the party going and the kids on a roll. Top Tip: Let them do as much of the work as possible.

1. Ital Pizza Minis

These snacks are king. But they can also be a meal in themselves. The best thing is that everyone can tailor-make their own little pizza by adding whatever savouries are in the fridge. And if you’re having a braai, the mini pizzas can be sandwiched together, cheese sides facing in. Then cook it on the not so hot part of the braai and served as a delicious “braai broodjie”. 2. A Boerie Braai

Whoever thought that it is not worth lighting a fire for a delicious piece of boerewors? Let the youngsters cut the wors into 5cm pieces, cook it themselves to their taste, then dip it in sweet mustard or tomato sauce. Yum. Best yet, there is always the option of ditching the dishes. Simply get them to serve the sizzling sausage on a fresh bread roll. Then wrap it in a paper serviette which will simply end up in the dustbin. Sorted.

Can you even remember when last you had a crispy, sugary, cinnamon flavoured pumpkin fritter? If the little ones go easy on the sugar, this moreish treat can be a healthier alternative than most shop-bought snacks.

4. Pop The Question

Popcorn anyone? The answer is sure to be a resounding, yes! There is no need to buy the pricey microwave kind as long as you have the kernels, a dash of cooking oil and some salt. Mixed with some biltong powder or a bit of garlic powder and herbs, it becomes a super-snack fit for any guests.

5. 'Tricolore' salad

This fresh and delicious red, white and green salad takes on the three colours of the Italian flag. It requires only a few ingredients: tomato, mozzarella cheese and basil leaves or pesto. Olive oil and balsamic reduction make the perfect dressing. Served as a starter, your family will tuck in, fo sho. 6. New Age Apples With Peanut Butter OR Cinnamon

Apples are always lovely to have around as a nutritious, easy-peasy standby snack, especially when served with a peanut butter and honey dip. Another idea is to sprinkle the apple quarters with a bit of cinnamon. Sounds weird but it’s actually really delicious. 

7. Tuna Melts

This is another oldie but a goodie. And always goes down a treat at the beach or at the pool. Simply halve bread rolls and spread with a little bit of butter. Then, in a mixing bowl, add a tin of drained tuna, chopped gherkins and pickled onions and then add a couple of dollops of mayo to your liking. A dash of pepper and paprika and your filling is done. You can also add fresh herbs and garlic powder for some extra oomph. Place the tuna filling on top of the rolls, sprinkle with a bit of grated cheddar and put into an oven at 220 degrees until the cheese is bubbling and the bottom of the rolls are crisp.
