5 LIFE LESSONS FROM MONKS – AND OTHER COOL PEOPLE WE LOVE

Here’s why and a few recommendations to get you started.

Let’s take a minute or two to remind ourselves of the inspirational, self-help books and TV programmes we may have come across in our lives. Think of Oprah and what a delightful impact she has on millions of people worldwide. There is a reason we return to her shows and magazines again and again – we need to be reminded of how we should be thinking to be happy. So here goes.

No, to negative thoughts, already!

Thoughts shape our lives. It is not what happens to us that determines our state of mind. It is how we think about things that make us happy or sad. Trying to frame things in a positive light is an important skill to master. In the wildly popular book, The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, Robin Sharman compares negative thoughts to weeds growing in a garden.

The truth is that we cannot control the future or what has happened to us in the past. The only moment that we can influence is NOW. Let us enjoy the moment and understand the power of that ability. Maybe we can channel some inner silence and ponder the thought over some weeding in our own garden?

Purpose

Given our modern lifestyles’ fast pace, it is sometimes difficult to keep ourselves on course to achieve our goals. One way to reach your objectives is to write them down. Try and be as specific as possible, setting yourself timelines and methods by which you will achieve your desired outcomes. If a person is not sure about what they want in life, they can waste a lot of time and energy pursuing the wrong things. There is no quicker way to find inner harmony than to understand what is really important to you. You are the only one who matters in this picture.

Keep Learning

No one is ever too young, or too old, to keep learning. The fascinating people that the TastyMoments team know are the ones who are most eager to learn. Learn anything: a new skill like fly fishing or knitting; another language, like Zulu or German; or facts about new places like Iceland or Brazil.

Happiness Is Not A Destination

Joy can be found in every step of our journey through life. We sometimes think, if only I had this, or that I will be happy. We look to relationships to fulfil us and money, fame, and friends. Still, ultimately the only way to be happy is to be content. When we are at peace, the world is a peaceful place. Let us get to grips with the fact that simple things such as kindness, honesty and humility are more important than all the glitter and gold we can imagine.

What Will Others Think?

Who really cares what your friend (sporting her Louis Vuitton handbag) thinks? Good deeds, courtesy and forgiveness, are the things that matter in life. Make your own list of concepts you consider to be necessary. We’ll bet that you will soon realise that not everyone has to like you and that your wants and needs are just as important as that of the chairperson of the ratepayers association. Live it!

Now, prepare a stack of crunchy cucumber sticks and cooked broccoli florets as a healthy starter before you all huddle in front of the TV to share an Ital Pizza Familia delight.

TastyMoments Tip: Eat, Pray, Love is an inspirational movie with a fabulous Italian theme to take everyone straight to pizza heaven. Try to get it online, and you will never be happier!
