Here’s why and a few recommendations to get you started.

Beaches For Africa

The TastyMoments team is definitely heading out to catch a wave or two now that the beaches are open again. Two of our more remote, unspoilt stretches of fine sand remained open to the public, and they’re still absolutely worth a visit. Our first choice is the West Coast or Namaqualand in the Northern Cape. Aim for August when the wildflower blooms create spectacular displays. If you prefer a more tropical climate, the equally beautiful Umkhanyakude district spans the region north of Richards Bay to Mozambique.

Everyone knows that we have some of the most spectacular, powdery beaches in the world. Lucky us! No need for us to hobble along pebbles like so many Europeans have to, to take a dip. Here we can choose to have entire beaches to ourselves.

You’re My Sunshine, My Only Sunshine …

Do we even need to mention the weather? If you have lived in Europe or other northern countries, you will have a deep appreciation for our fantabulous weather. Something we often take for granted.

The feel-good effect of the golden rays is a huge bonus. However, our fantastic weather also means we have a notable absence of destructive natural disasters like avalanches, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and tornadoes. So, let’s give thanks for that – and for not having to live under an oppressive grey sky.

We all know that Table Mountain with its 1 460 species of fynbos is one. But what about the Baberton-Makhonjwa geotrail? There you can observe some of the oldest signs of life in the world. The Barberton Supergroup have rock formations that are 3.5 billion years old. Worth a visit.

Then there’s the Aliwal Shoal near Umkomaas, home to many grey nurse sharks (also known as ragged-tooth sharks) that conglomerate there from July to November to mate. Visitors from worldwide gather at the Shark and Shoal guest house to dive the site and experience this adventure. It is considered to be one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. In addition to the sharks, the Marine Big 5 includes whales, dolphins, seals and penguins. All of which can be seen along the coastline.

For Joburgers, the Cradle of Humankind is on our doorstep. This testament to man’s evolution over 3.5 million years makes for a fascinating time travel.

And, let’s not forget the Cape Floral route on the West Coast which proudly struts its stuff in spectacular, full-colour glory in August each year.

Time to plan a trip with the family, we think. And while you’re plotting your route, pop a few Ital Pizza Slices in the oven to keep the energy levels up. Then simply slide onto plates and enjoy!

TOP TIP: Pizza slices make for lovely, easy lunchbox meals, especially if you add pieces of carrot and frozen peas on the side.
